A charitable organization helps in providing educational tools to the less fortunate in the developing nations.

This charitable organization deals with XO laptop computers where XO develops laptops that cost under $400. XO receives profits of between 5% and 10% from the sale of these computers. The OLPC is nonprofit making only about two million dollars from each of its members to facilitate the manufacture of these laptops. Hence, they are made cheap to help the developing nations. Also, when one buys, he or she promotes the education of the less fortunate. Therefore, most people buy such laptops to help other people more than for their personal use.

Most laptops that cost under $400 are second hand laptop computers. These second hand laptops are good also as the have only aged but have good functioning capabilities. There are also new laptops that go for less that amount. These laptops are from major companies like Acer, Toshiba and also HP. They provide an option to get reliable laptops for less than $400. SONY VAIO P GETS A SPECS BUMP

Sony has updated its Vaio P line of netbooks. The new models will have Windows 7 Home Premium or Windows 7 Professional as against the previous models which had Windows Vista. Sony has also upgraded the hardware. The new specifications aren’t totally new. Many of them were already available on Japanese models.

The upgraded models will run on Intel Atom Z5xx series processors clocking at up to 2GHz. They will also have up to 256GB of solid state flash storage. All models in the series have 8 inch display with 1600 x 768 pixels.

The processor is still an Atom Z5xx series processor, and it seems, Sony has no intention of upgrading it to the better N2xx series processor. The integrated GMA 500 graphics delivered reasonable performance during some demo sessions, but don’t expect it to handle high end games.

The biggest problem with the Sony Vaio P – its price – however remains unsolved. Even the cheapest models with a 1.33GHz Intel Atom Z520 CPU, 2GB of RAM, and an 80GB hard drive still cost around $849.99.

DELL VOSTRO 1710 REVIEW

VOSTRO 1710 – DELL makes a good leap over 1310

DELL VOSTRO 1710Dell still firmly distinguishes between personal users and business customers on its web site. If it were exclusively up to the salesperson from the green island, private customers must first and foremost be satisfied with laptops of the Inspiron, the XPS, or the new-fangled Studio Line series. Its actually a misfortune, for the reason that looking into the business segment of Dell, youll find a quantity of very interesting laptop variants.

Design
At the 1st glimpse the appearance of the Vostro 1710 seems to be to a certain extent stiff and somewhat stocky and raw-boned, so, it necessitates some time to get used to its seem. An improvement is that typing does no longer feel like rubbing with the palms as it feels when typing on the older Vostro 1310. The reason may be the superior case, which indicates additional space between touchpad and the beveled edge.

Performance
Dells entry-level variant of the Vostro string is in foundation gear a very rational 17 inch laptop, which is accessible for just 379 Euro. A design with Intel Core 2 Duo T8100, 4 GB RAM, and incorporated webcam plus microphone, costs on the subject of 670 Euro according to Dells on-line superstore. However, the evaluated laptop came only with 2 GB RAM, but if not indistinguishable configuration. Depending on unusual offers the value can vary.

The reviewed laptop was planted with an NVidia Geforce 8600M GS graphics accelerator card with 256 MB GDDR3 video memory. Even if the Vostro 1710 is intended as business laptop, the Geforce 8600M GS is adequately influential for one or the other game during the breaks - if you are enthusiastic to cooperate about the superiority. In addition, the used exhibit reacts quick enough to keep away from streaks. Due to sound emissions of only 30.5 dB (A) the Dell Vostro 1710 can be named extremely silent in idle mode. You can barely hear a sound, when the hard disk is accessed. The evaluated sculpt of the Dell Vostro 1710 was planted with a 56Wh (5045 mAh) Lithium-Ions Battery. It supplies the test sample with a extremely acceptable battery life.

Overall
To sum up, the Dell Vostro 1710 is an impartial laptop with only diminutive disadvantages. If you do not merely necessitate a full-bodied laptop with high-quality workmanship for a rational price (Based on the customization), but also a good quality customer prop up with on-site service and optionally elongated warranty, you are accurate to look for a Dell laptop, for the reason that it can be personalized to your personage needs and obligations.

Pros
+ Sensible price
+ High-quality price-performance ratio
+ Matte display
+ Tough case, good workmanship
+ Squat system noise

Cons:
- Comparatively warm underside
- Feeble sound
- Susceptible glossy lid.

BEST USES FOR OLD USB FLASH DRIVES

If youre like me you have probably purchased well over a dozen flash drives (not to mention media cards) and sad to say most of them are outdated (in terms of storage space). So if youre like me who cannot pass the offer of tinkering around with something than this project is for you (if you can find your old drives that is).

A couple of ideas include using it as a key for you computer. If you have a bunch of files on yout computer that are either classified or youre too embarrassed to share with the world than this option is for you. Windows allows you to use a USB drive as a physical key and thus the system will not turn on unless the USB drive is present.

The next idea is for portable software. Not everyone is a fan of Firefox and thus you might want to carry it around so you dont have to use IE, Opera or Safari. Most free programs allow you to install the programs on the USB drive and thus can be used on any computer that supports the software without the need to install it on the local machine.

And probably the best use of all is to use it as a virtual network computing (VNC) to access any computer you configure it with. While web based programs work good they lag alot and it is much nicer to have near actual speeds as if you were at your home computer. And best of all most VNC programs are free.

DELL STUDIO 17 REVIEW

Dell launches a classy outfit in Studio 17

Preceding year Dell to conclude realized that customers dont desire another anonymous, faceless black and gray notebook that gets gone astray in the crowd. Todays mobile cohort needs laptops that are as exclusive and fashionable as feasible. The result was the astonishingly nice-looking and astoundingly accepted 13.3" XPS M1330 and the 15.4" Dell XPS M1530. Taking things one step advanced, Dell revealed the extremely customizable Studio 17 laptops.

Design
The 1st time you witness at the Studio 17 its as if Dell added a small number of inches to the XPS M1530, cut out the brushed aluminum components, and presented a few more ways to tailor the look. The end effect is a remarkable looking desktop replacement notebook. I use the expression "desktop replacement" for the reason that the majority of the people in the market for a 17-inch laptop arent planning to lug their laptop everywhere and utilize it during customary airline travel.

Performance
At the conclusion of the day the most significant components of a notebook are the internal parts that do all the necessary work. Our review component came planted with the Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 process (2.5GHz) which proffers outstanding performance in terms of integer crunching and video encoding. The 3GB of structure RAM is sufficient to satisfy Vista and still offer enough RAM for most requirements. The 320GB Toshiba hard disk drive (HDD) in our assessment unit is a 5400rpm drive with high-quality performance but its meritorious mentioning that you can endow the Studio 17 with a 2nd HDD for additional storage and presentation.

The ATI Radeon HD 3650 devoted graphics accelerator card gives adequate power for standard gaming or 3D graphics work, but it would have been pleasant if Dell presented added devoted graphics options.

Conclusion
All things said and done, the Dell Studio 17 is the most striking 17-inch consumer laptop weve witnessed so far this year. The construct quality, choice of customizable variants, expandability, approach, and cost make this an exceptional choice if youre in the marketplace for a 17-inch laptop. Still, we would have preferred to observe more graphics card variants than just the incorporated Intel X3100 and devoted ATI Radeon HD 3650.

Pros
+ Gorgeous design
+ Solid assortment of obtainable configurations
+ Levelheaded battery life
+ Pleasant keyboard, touchpad and media buttons
+ Great constituent arrangement
+ Dell Dock is a pleasant attribute

MSI WIND REVIEW – STILL BREEZES AROUND EVEN WITH VISTA ONBOARD

The world of net books are exploding every moment, But the extent of the high end operating system which means there is no chance, because the price would spike up, But the MSI Wind with the Vista loaded on board spells something different, read on to reveal more.

Design
Almost all mini laptop producers are shunning Windows Vista, and manufacturers are whirling towards Windows XP or Linux. Some say it is for the reason that the operating system is a reduced amount of bloat and more authority efficient, while others declare it is just cheaper to buy. In view of the fact that I have had the frame of mind that Vista only requires a few mild tweaks before it suffers like an enhanced XP, I decided to pull the elicit and load Vista onto our MSI Wind.

Performance
MSI doesnt officially shore up Windows Vista on the Wind, and has no drivers particularly labeled for occupy in Vista. When I 1st stacked Vista onto our Wind, I was a bit troubled since the wireless LAN and wired LAN were not functioning from the initiate. Devoid of a network association you are in actual fact out of luck, so this was a make or break state of affairs. I bowed to the MSI driver site and strong-willed to give the XP drivers an inoculation, and turns out they work with no or any problem. Same goes for the wired LAN and then card reader drivers which are ultimately pulled in via Windows Update once I had an internet connection.

The next stride was getting the Intel GMA 950 running, which was as uncomplicated as pulling a driver pack from the Intel site. Audio drivers labored from the beginning, so now the laptop was good to go. An additional Vista perk was the ceaseless "wireless connection" class windows which would not impede popping up in XP by no means came up while running Vista. Either the drivers worked superior, or Vista just suppresses those communications. I was extremely happy to not have to agreement with closing those maddening pop-up messages any longer.

I anticipated battery life to be similar, if not a bit inferior than XP. Vista has more things always working in the backdrop, the system utilizes more of its RAM, and Vista is overstuffed right? Much to my shock, battery life turned out to be relatively enhanced under Vista: almost 20% healthier than Windows XP under the identical conditions.

Conclusion
While Windows Vista avails a lot of bad press these days, it isnt for all time the nastiest operating system choice for laptops. In our speedy testing of Windows Vista on the MSI Wind, not only did it provide us a pleasant bump in presentation, but we also gained precious battery life. For a packed together sub notebook you actually cant request for more, particularly on the battery life front. For now I believe Vista is here to hang about on our MSI Wind.
Pros
+ Battery life Enhanced
+ Compact notebook capable of Vista
Cons
- Definite drop in graphics quality

KNOW YOUR LAPTOP – OPTICAL DRIVES – II

The previous article would have provided you a general over view on what an optical drive is all about. But that alone is just not enough for you to understand the complex nature of the optical drive. Further more in this article we shall stumble upon the analogy of a compact disc. In order to comprehend how the optical drive labors, you have to be acquainted with how an optical disc labors. This is appealingly straightforward. The disc is essentially 3 layers: the big synthetic disc part is on the underside, a philosophical surface is in the center, and then the pinnacle part of the disc is where the fine art or brand name is, and this part in point of fact defends the data itself. The data is reserved in microscopic pits in the insightful surface. This is why scraping the disc itself isnt disastrous. Scratches still arent superior for it though, for the reason that the laser utilized to read the disc is altered exceptionally precisely, and if the disc is spoiled, the erroneous scratch or hair may refract or wedge the beam and formulate the data tricky to read.
